Generative AI (GenAI) is a type of Artificial Intelligence that can create a wide variety of data, such as images, videos, audio, text, and 3D models. It does this by learning patterns from existing data, then using this knowledge to generate new and unique outputs. GenAI is capable of producing highly realistic and complex content that mimics human creativity, making it a valuable tool for many industries such as gaming, entertainment, and product design. Recent breakthroughs in the field, such as GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) and Midjourney, have significantly advanced the capabilities of GenAI. These advancements have opened up new possibilities for using GenAI to solve complex problems, create art, and even assist in scientific research. Adobe also launched a beta for Firefly today that showcases how creators of all experience and skill levels can generate high quality images and amazing text effects.
In my experience with Firefly so far, it’s generated some very cool effects — but I’ve also seen its limitations. It’s a cloud-based service, so there’s reason to expect Adobe will make good on promises of improvements as it retrains Firefly for better results. Adobe will raise its subscription prices by about 9% to 10% in November, citing the addition of Firefly and other AI features, along with new tools and apps.

While Firefly, like generative AI as a whole, is in its infancy, it’s clear that Adobe was not going to be left out of the AI race when it comes to image generation. Adobe has been in the AI game for a while now—separately from image creation—with its Sensei AI product. However, like many other AI and machine learning implementations, Sensei AI computes in the background rather than interactively like generative AI, making it less sexy and headline-worthy. Regardless, Adobe is not new to this and has already been using AI to drive insights and decisions within its marketing platforms. My initial assessment of Firefly is that Adobe is taking a human-centered, creative approach to AI.
Adobe chairman, president and CEO Shantanu Narayen said at the Summit that creators would eventually be paid for their original work using the generative AI. I believe that Adobe is still working out the details of this and will hold off on releasing a compensation model until the company has determined pricing on Firefly and fully understands the value-to-volume exchange for generative AI. Just this week, Microsoft announced Bing Image Creator, mere weeks after its ChatGPT integration launch. Large language models (LLMs) that power generative AI chatbots don’t encounter the same ethical complexity and copyright issues with text as with images, so the progression is reasonable.

Plenty of people are alarmed by « deepfake » AI copies of real people and impressed with realistic AI images like the Pope blinged out in a puffy jacket. To help combat the problems, Adobe is using a technology called content credentials that it helped develop to improve transparency. In my testing, Firefly often was able to capably blend imagery with existing scenes, either inserting elements with the generative fill tool or widening an image with generative expand. It sometimes can match a scene’s lighting and perspective, a difficult feat, and even create plausible reflections.
For example, in the parachuting hippopotamus image above, I first prompted Photoshop to generate a hippo against a blue sky, then expanded the image to give it more sky, then added the parachute. But it also often produces distortions or weird problems – for example, an elephant with a second trunk where its tail should be. Often you’ll have to reject a lot of Firefly duds and try different prompts to get useful results, and so far at least, it doesn’t look likely that MidJourney fans will abandon that rival tool for generating AI imagery. I used Photoshop’s Firefly generative AI technology to add this red crab to a photo I took of an American avocet sweeping a mudflat with its bill.
